would a bad ground wire also be a reason for draining a battery dead every
three months or so?

Not if the car sits unused for that length of time. There's always an electronic draw from the computer(s) on the battery. So if the car is going to be sitting, disconnect the negative (-) battery cable to prevent the battery from dying. HTH. -Jim
