Several things that can cause this, timing is top of the list, there is a camshaft sensor, and crankshaft sensor that could be bad. Fuel issues can cause backfiring also, fuel pump, bad injectors, vacuum leaks. Pull a spark plug and see what it looks like, If it is black then it is an indication of a fuel issue, should be burning clean. Another thing to check is the EGR valve system. May not being working, EGR stuck open.
