Lighted Tach & Speed Needles

Asked by moveon May 11, 2012 at 02:27 PM about the 1992 Lexus SC 400 RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Both red lit needles went out on the tach and speedo.  Are they lit by bulbs that can be changed out on
the back of the instrument cluster?

From what I hear, they have led lights. You can take out the cluster and put in new led lights. Mine are out too but when my battery recently died they started flashing....very weird.

Pull your instrument cluster out of the car, remove the lense so that you can get them, pull them off and reinstall them. Sometimes that works unless they are truly dead. The lights are tiny SMD LED's and replacing them is nearly impossible without special equipment and knowledge. The best bet, if they are in fact dead, is to look for 1995-96 needles on e-Bay. They show up regularly, they are the red ones, and the most durable.

Found 1996 es300 in salvage yard. Pulled instrument cluster, removed lens cover then pulled the needles I needed. Did same thing to my 1994 es300 then installed the replacement needles I pulled from th 96 cluster. Worked great
