Will it work

Asked by Jrgj12 May 22, 2016 at 10:21 PM about the 2000 Lexus RX 300 AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I bought my son a used 2000 Lexus
Rx300 and within a month his brakes
needed repaired the front  passenger side
caliper went bad so he went to The auto
parts store and purchased a new caliper
front rotors and front and rear pads. And I
was on my way to do a brake job for him I
started with the front passenger side
because that's where I knew I would spend
the most time everything went well I
replaced the caliper, rotor and pads we
bled the brakes and then I moved over to
the drivers side I replaced the rotor and
mounted the bracket for the original caliper
and when I put the pads on I noticed that
the pads were hanging over the rotor after
scratching my head and a trip back up to
the auto parts store I discovered that I had
put an SE300 caliper and rotor on the
passengers side now my question is do I
leave it or do I need to replace it all with
the Rx300 caliper and rotor it all bolted up
and worked just fine I now have Rx300
rotor and caliper on drivers side and Se300
caliper and rotor on passenger side the
rotor is 1/4" smaller. I know it works but is
it dangerous and will it fail?

For your kid's safety change them to the right size. There is a reason why each car has different sizes. Each car weighs differently and each is designed to handle different weights and braking power. Should you decide to sell the car and you forget to change them and the buyer has an accident, even if the buyer bought the car as is, they can sue you and it is not worth it. Never compromise safety for few more time, better time than anybody's safety.
