when engine light on

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just drove up to the bay area and back today. Engine light on when I drove 750 miles, did
not feel anything different. So I called Lexus dealer and consulted service department. Her
answer was:if you feel any difference while driving, pull over to the side of the road and
call tow service. Otherwise, drive to the nearest dealership for a diagnosis which will cost
$135. Does it make sense? Will it be just replacing the cap of gas vent? Thanks.

yes, a tow every time the check engine light comes on seems a little excessive- you are right, sometimes it is something simple- and you can at least DRIVE your car to the dealer- maybe this is an upscale Lexus kinda policy where everyone can just afford to have their car towed to the dealer every time it hiccups- and the dealer and their favorite wrecker driver get to increase their business- or the dealer is just playing "CYA"- but whatever, you could at least just check your oil level, look for worn belts, oil leaks, or funny smells and decide for yourself if it ok to drive it to the shop- another suggestion is to find a really good independent shop who will talk to you on a more human level than just giving you the "party line"
