when car is running, the speedometer does not show a true running speed
intermittently. sometimes when car is running at 30MPH, it shows 50MPH, 0r
running at 50 MPH, it shows 80MPH,  then the other times, it is Okay. this is
an intermittent problem

A live data scan would really help in this instance, if the speed sensor is reading a stable signal then the problem could either be bad wiring or the speedometer head, however if the speed sensor reading is not stable then it needs to be replaced and hopefully that cures the problem.
