Jeep stalling and not filling
I have an 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Whenever the
gas is below a quarter tank and I come to a stop, it
begins to putter really bad and stall out unless I hit
the gas to keep it going. Twice now I've gone to put
gas in and it doesn't let me anymore as if it was full,
but the gauge only said half a tank. What could it
be? Is it possible someone put sugar in my gas
tank? I read it would make the tank think it was full
and obviously mess things up which could be the
stalling? Any ideas?
You should never run less than 1/4 tank of fuel, doing so exposes the fuel pump causing it to run hotter than normal cause it uses the fuel as a coolant, no fuel no coolant. The stalling could be the pumps pickup screen is partially plugged from the bottom so it is only taking fuel from the upper portion of the screen, when you stop the fuel sloshes forward running the pump out of fuel so it stalls. The failure to fill when taking on fuel could be a restriction in the fuel filler hoses, they have collapsed or are pinched.
