Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Air bag light is on, disconnected negative bat cable waited 5 minutes reconnect cable, turn ignition switch to on & still stays lit. I checked the two fuses at fuse box & they are good. Anybody got any ideas.

Ditto what tennisshoes said. Also check the plugs under the front seats. They can come unplugged or a wire can get pinched or broken.

Does the battery need to be disconnected to check plugs? And Can I pull up codes or is that a dealer item?

No battery does not need to be disconnected. Just do not have the key on. Autozone can scan the codes for free.

turn key on and off 3x and codes will flash on. write them down and check online.

My mechanic says there is an electrical short in the seat belt buckle causing the air bag light to go on. Will that stop the air bag from deploying in an accident?

Have to take it to the dealer, it's a module they have to replace, it's free let them know you're airbag light is on its a recall.

@hmcosby1 I went to the dealer yesterday for sale problem. Replaced module however light is still on. Don’t believe auto parts stores will be able to pull that particular code but won’t hurt to check

I agree with GURU9N6G4. I just had this problem happen to me this morning. 2002 Jeep Grande Air bag light came on and the seat belt light came just about the same time. I shut the car off and switched drivers and of course readjusted the seat belt. Both lights shut right off at the same time. Problem gone I am sure the air bag is still good.

So, we are about to go on a trip this month and I see that the airbag lights can come on due to something under the seat, or other reasons with the wiring under the seat. Ours seems to come on and off. I think it happens more when I put bags on the passenger seat. So, if we check under the seat and the light goes off - the airbags will still work, right?

06/11/19 2002 Grand Cherokee: Open Center Console Storage between seats and remove the two mounting screws, remove Console Storage and now you can clearly identify couplings to each seat. I separated both coupling and sprayed with electro-cleaner then re-connected and the trouble light went away! (Wes)

So, I just got rid of both of mine by unplugging the drivers side wiring harness and plugging it back in. Flipped the key back and forth a few times to refresh it and both lights went away. Did the ole “turn her off and back on again” trick.

Yellow connection plug under driver's side front seat. Unplugged and reconnected to correct air bag malfunction indicator. My guess is, I reached under seat at some point and pulled apart accidentally. Light is now off with no other issues. (Well, a 'lilrust on the fenders but? Thnx. 4 your time.
