Jeep shuts off

Asked by Tyler Jan 29, 2017 at 05:32 PM about the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My jeep will sometimes shut off while coming to a stop at
a red light or while I'm stopped at a red light it shuts off. It
also shuts off sometimes when I switch between reverse
and drive. And when I turn the steering wheel after I shift
into drive or reverse, it shuts off. It seems that turning the
wheel makes it lose power. Before it shuts off, it starts
shaking like it's completely losing power and then shuts
off. I have to put it in park, then shut it off, and turn it back
on. It always starts back up every time. It just makes
people mad that are behind me because I'm not moving
when the light turns green. And it seems to be getting
worse. This is happening a lot more frequently lately.

There is a wiring harness that runs behind the engine and over time it rubs through and can cause problems. I would check that one first.

My Jeep did the same thing you explained yours did for months got soo annoying then I changed my crank shaft sensor and never had a problem since. Cheap fix and easy if you do it yourself my part was $15 and took 10min to change.
