I have a Audi A8 that wa changed the engine. now it will not engage int gear, is there some sort of security that will make it do that?

I purchased the car with the engine locked up, I purchase the engine from a used parts person. My Son who is a mechanic changed the engines, but now when it is put into drive or reverse the car acts like it is still in neutral.

Tell you this!! If he miss to align and secure the torque converter into the Trany the proper way while he was installing the engine then he damage the transmission oil pump.
