When you buy a car and you don't first have it looked into you never know what your going to get into. replacing the engine would be a bit of a costly alternative i would only deem after ascertaining just how much work the car needs done first.. Besides if you know what to look for when fixing a car you can fix it relatively easy and cheaply. Any ways the 3.0L audis had alot of venting issues which caused stall outs and not running conditions and they are all mostly related to the crank case hoses. So here is what i recommend get under the hood and look at and inspect all the pvc piping you can see. its likely one of the lines has clogged, broken apart or cracked. To temporarily fix the issue you can put some rubber antifreeze lines on it but you will need to replace all the pvc and breather ways more then likely. once the gap is bridged of the broken part it will start. New crank case breather hoses often cost only around 128-164$ roughly and are easy to install on your own. usually http://www.blauparts.com has a full kit but they don't seem to have this for this car so you may have to shop around and it might get a little more pricy. I repalced my lines with rubber ones till i could find a kit and get it to me so that should be fine temporarly.
