03 Audi A4 3.0 Quattro won't start

Asked by JWhite86 Jul 12, 2016 at 12:20 PM about the 2003 Audi A4 3.0 quattro Sedan AWD

Question type: General

I just installed an engine in my Audi after having a
bad timing belt and valve break. I drove the car a
few times after and no issues. I had someone come
test drive the car to buy it. Everything was fine on
the test drive. They went to get money to pay me,
came back 30 minutes later and the car wouldn't
start. I just get a click. Now this also happened
when before I realized the timing belt was bad and
tried manually turning the crank shaft to make sure
the engine didn't seize which I think ended up
breaking the valve. Does this car have a fail safe or
something? And am I going through dejavu?

if the timing belt broke you broke valves or bent them. Some times replacing the valves solves the issue but more often you need to machine or replace the heads. if your jsut getting clicking you likely have a dead battery did you make sure all the alternator connections are back on? this would be the likely cause to a dead battery or simpley the battery is no good

Deathjam4 the belt didn't break but it had a lot of teeth that were off the belt. I did break a valve and it busted the piston but that was on the old engine. I put in 2 batteries from other cars I have. Still wouldn't start. Like I said though, I had just driven the car and parked it. Then it just wouldn't start just like that? Could it be the starter?

its possible it is the starter is just stuck. You say its just clicking when you crank ? if it has enough juice and it just clicks this ussaly indicates a starter issue. Check the starter and make sure the wire that goes to the points is still intact the picture illustrates the wire i speak of. Try giving the starter a rap with a solid object 1-2 times and then try starting it again (do not strike it roughly but with medium power) and try it again if it starts then your starter is no good as it means the points are worn out. or the bearing is stuck.

I've since sold this car. But, to anyone having this issue, check the ground wire. That's what the issue turned out to be. The starter was perfectly fine.
