2000 GMC SIERRA low oil pressure now won't do anything

Asked by Teresa Jan 25, 2016 at 12:50 PM about the 2000 GMC Sierra 2500 3 Dr SLT 4WD Extended Cab LB HD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We replaced a rear end on our 2000 Sierra 6.0L 4
wheel drive about 3 weeks ago couldn't test drive it
right away cause it was stuck due to being in our
pasture and it was super soft due to heavy rains -
anyway when we did get it out let it sit until next
day then took for a test drive that only lasted about
3 miles before the low pressure dropped to 0 pulled
over and check oil - completely full was starting to
run rough so we took it back to our house but on
the way it died off completely and we had to go get
a tractor to drag it back - it will do nothing still full of
oil have charged battery , has starter tested ( it's
good ) any suggestions ?

It sounds like your oil pump went and isn't getting oil from the pan to the motor

So will it turn over? If so need to check for spark and fuel pressure. Did it knock or tick when it shut down? If not probably worth while to try and get it started to verify oil pressure with a mechanical gauge. Even so if you had a mechanical gauge and the engine would turn over, it should show some oil pressure to verify.

Doesn't turn over ,it just stopped as we were turning into our road and now nothing ?

Does it sound like the starter engages? And how did the motor sound before it shut down?

Turn key it does nothing but security light come on and flashes hear a humming noise that is all Made no noises before it died

Ok thanks, that tells me something. So #1 the engine itself did not knock or tick before it shut down. I'm just trying to figure out the oil pressure situation. Now you have nothing, and it don't make any starter noise. For some reason the security system kicked in. I want you to try to reset it by turning the key to the start position, then release it and leave it ON the ON POSITION for about 10 minutes. The security light will flash during this time until about 10 minutes are up, then it should go out and not be on. At this point turn the key to the start position, and nothing probably will happen, but then turn the key off and and wait a minute. Then try to restart it. Then we would address the oil pressure issue.

Same here just replaced rear end and front end and had to modify driveshaft and put new tires on just before all that was done 1000 plus and now engine won't start ??? Very frustrating but engine and truck do have 350,000 miles on them

Security light still flashing? Not going to start. I'll have to do some research.

Thats a start thats good. Does the starter turn the engine over? If it starts thats great, but I doubt that it did.

Only thing we heard was the hum which I believe is the fuel pump kicking in

Ok, get a starter relay for it. Sounds like the starter is not getting power. You can verify by using a test light on the small wire on the starter when turning the key to start. I know you will need help but a starter relay is cheap.

You stated oil pressure dropped to 0, you stopped and checked it, (so far so good) but then you continued to drive it home. That's where you nailed the coffin shut on it. In the future if a vehicle completely loses oil pressure shut it off and tow it to the nearest repair shop or your garage if you are a DIY'er.
