how important is the transfer case fluid? and what happens if you run the truck without any transfer case fluid?

Asked by Rachel Dec 16, 2014 at 06:27 PM about the 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 4WD Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

about a week ago i was trying to change my oil filter and pulled the wrong plug and
this dark blueish fluid came out and after a little research i found that it belonged to
the transfer case. I talked to a guy at autozone and he said if its dark blue then its
extremely dirty and only a gm dealer can get new fluid but i haven't had the time to
take my truck to the shop but the pass few days the steering has become wobbly
and theres a lot of play just trying to go straight. And last night  my service 4wd light
came on. i know i need to take it in but was wondering just how badly i screwed
myself lol

That transfer case is working to keep the parts lubricated! Get it done immediately! Bearings, shims, this could be a very costly mistake! The pump works in either case that is, whether or not you are in engaged in 4WD . Good luck! Check for oil pump rubbing on your transfer case while youre in there! Google pump rub!
