repoman, First off, if you not a mechanic, go to a local shop that you trust and just talk to them and see if they'll give you some advice. As far as "I know" this transmission's 4th gear is electronically controlled... I may be wrong. If it is it could be just a control module in the tranny. And to answer your second ?: A 2 wheel drive auto or manual tranny have a differ output or "tail shaft" because a 4-wheel drive has a transfer case maited to it, it will have a shorter tail shaft. This is not as simple as replacing the shaft. When a transmission is put together the tail shaft is one of the first parts put in. So basically your friends transmission will have to be tour apart. And if your going to do that, me personally I'd just have mine rebuilt. either way it has to come apart, and putting old parts back in makes no sense to me. So I would tear my 4-wheel drive one apart "or find a transmission store" and have it rebuilt. But also salvage yards will sell tranny's anywhere from $600-2800 a rebuilt will be in the high 1000's usually. Do a little research, but the easiest way will not be the 2-whee; drive option, nor the cheapest. Good luck. I have changed out a few on my own vehicles, so if you have any questions just repost. :)

Your problem is the 4th clutch gear its in your valve body it has springs behind it. Now be carfule these valve bodys arent as great as the 400 so they burr real easy keep all removed parts frome the valve body soaked in tranny fluid. Check how too videos on rebuilds thell explain the 4th clutch in the valve body. If this aint the problem then it your 4th gear clutch pack its in the tranny also look at how too videos.

So you can swap out the transfer case from the four wheel drive and put it in a two wheel drive

Hello everybody. I have a 2002 GMC 1500 SLE 2wd with the 5.3ltr engine. I lost 2nd and 4th gear in my transmission. It has 245 thousand miles on it and this is the first time I’ve ever had any problems.

Sorry guys. I need a good tranny if anybody has a rebuilt or one with low miles on it. I think it’s a 4L60E.
