Is your battery good? I would have it tested. Clean the battery terminals and cable ends while you are at it.

Sounds like an alternator problem. The light comes on when the system is discharging rather than charging.

I had the same thing. I tested the battery and it had a low charge, since it was under warranty Auto Zone replaced it for free. After replacement I still had the problem so I replaced the alternator with OEM (for a 5.3L 130 amp alternator) and worked fine. No more issues. I have seen a lot of this same type of issue and people still had the same problem after replacing the alternator. Make sure you get one that has the correct amperage. There are a lot of substitutes out there that will fit but won't clear your problem.

You can never have too many grounds. My gauges went crazy, battery light on, engine died. Checked with ohm meter. No good. Added 4 gauge grounds engine to body, and from alternator bracket to battery. The 01 GMC Sierra 1500 w/4.8l is heading for 300,000. At 250,000 miles now. Simple to check. Just check continuity from negative terminal to both engine and body. Should read almost 0. Removing ground straps and cleaning them good should do the trick also. Good luck.

I’ve had my battery tested and alternator and my battery light still comes on. My starter it going out cause it whines after I start it. Could it cause my battery light to come on periodically and cause my voltage to go up and down?????
