Hard too start

I have a 1998 GMC Sierra SL series 1500 pickup with the 4.3 liter V-6. It would start instantly every time at the touch of the key since new. All I had to do was turn the key and it would start. I try to start it now and it will turn over and cough. I will have to do this maybe 6-7 times then it will finally start. Any Ideas to help will be appreciated.
