1997 Sierra Won't Start, Won't Crank

Asked by Armin Dec 04, 2016 at 04:51 PM about the 1997 GMC Sierra 1500 K1500 SL 4WD Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1997 Sierra that all of a sudden won't start. Never had this problem
before. It sits most of the time, and I only pull it out to haul hay or garbage
etc. Yesterday, I had to pick up some equipment, and drove it about 150
miles. I stopped on the way to get gas, load equipment, and it started up no
problem each stop. As soon as I got home, I shut her off to unload, then ten
minutes later I try to start her up, and nothing. The console comes on, door
indicator alarm, headlights, the usual, but when I try to crank, I hear a single
click, then nothing.

The battery is only about 2-3 years old. The voltage is about 12.07V and as
soon as I crank, it drops to maybe .8V. I tried jumping it, but that didn't help.

Any suggestions?

Battery is weak, should be 12.4 minimum. Get it charged and clean the battery terminals, check the battery cables for corrosion and make sure they're tight

Thanks for the reply Irodri911, but why would it be weak after a 150 mile drive, and not even crank when I tried to jump it?

If your battery cables are corroded, battery did not receive any charge and used up power on your accesories
