I have a 97 GMC SIERRA 1500. It does not have
positive traction. Do you know what year it did so I
can swap our the rearend or just swap gears?

They made them both was back in 97, but they were called limited slip differentials, posi trac have been taken out of the picture as they proved to be rather dangerous when driving on slick roadways and trying to make a turn, with both tires driving frowardit would force the vehicle to go straight instead of turning, so the limited slip was born, it would transfer power from the tire slipping to the tire that had traction, cycling back and forth until equal traction was attained then switching back into normal mode. You can still get what the off roaders call air lockers, but that is for serious off roading.
