Fuel pump installation

Jack up truck, actually.. see about rolling the front two wheels on makeshift ramps . I struggled to remove the gas tank because the truck was still too low with 4 jacks. 1- reached above tank and removed anything attached to vehicle 2- removed 3 screws /gas cap/filler hose - the thick one goes into tank with rubber grommet and the smaller metal hose attatched to rubber hose on top tank. 3- two straps. Only bolted on one side ( along the driveshaft - small space. Need extension for ratchet. 4- have something supporting tank 5- slide out from under truck( hopefully easily. 6 -there’s the locking ring aka a big clamp and all that top is attached to a spirally metal tube and plastic base. Some wires and a float. I didn’t want to break anything before knowing all this but it didn’t want to come out smoothly and it wasn’t attached on mine correctly anyway so I. Just pulled. 7- was unimpressed- thought the pump would be more solid looking since it’s so important. But just that 5 inch metal thing in middle is the pump. Theirs a fuel strainer bag attatched to bottom of pump. ( never heard of that before ). Mine was full that’s what kills pump when it strains no more . 8- I am poor and went cheap. I followed the last owners jerry rig and re- zip ties with wire the assembly to the top. And cleaned electric wires( hopes that my gas sending will work after) cause didn’t work. 9- manual says push it back in hole. I guess they say push because there’s no suttle way . I didn’t like that. It wants to force up like your doing it wrong but hold it down and lock that ring back ! 10- grab a drink because there’s no relief the reattaching the top to the switches and hoses the right ones almost blindly. Turn the outlet hoses toward center of truck and inlet valves toward gas cap hole. Then try to tighten tiny hoses and clamps with no head room. 11- I reinstalled the fuel cap/ filler assembly and leave it loose cause need to stick the large filler tube back into grommet hole on tank. Maybe you can do it prior but I had no room . 12- make sure you have gas cans to check it all:). I totally cleaned mine out and it took about 4 gallons to test but had to get more to make it to station. I see now why running low on fuel can damage pump. Seeing how much fuel is need to reach it on this old truck it’s prob best to stay st half a tank always.
