Car won't start

Asked by Sgood5 May 09, 2016 at 02:24 AM about the 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My van makes a single click noise when I try to
start it. Sometimes it cranks the first time,
sometimes it takes multiple tries. I want to try
everything possible before I take it in

One loud single click means the contact lugs are worn in the starter solenoid on the starter, remove the starter and take off the little cover on the solenoid, carefully pull out the contact plunger assembly, you should be able to see the burned out contact lugs on each side of the housing, and check th contact ring, make sure it doesn't have any chunks burned away, then head to your local parts store with starter in hand to make sure you get the right lugs and if needed a contact ring, then it just a matter of time to replace the lugs, not too hard to do, put it back together and bench test it just too make sure you got it back together correctly, then put it back on and your good to go.

In addition to the above...check for loose or corroded battery and starter connections. These connections need to be clean and tight.

Have Autozone check your battery, connections, and charging system.
