white smoke

started car one morning and white smoke came from engine shut it off
returned next day same thing happened towed to repair shop that had
replaced a thermostat two days earlier car never ran hot but heat stopped
working when mechanic started car no smoke appeared but i heard a
clanking sound coming from the engine just happened so i have not heard
back from the mechanic yet----- any thoughts????
