2004 PR Cruiser...timing belt?

Asked by Wnhklhuff Apr 25, 2017 at 06:42 PM about the 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser Wagon FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am in LOVE with my 2004 PT...but
mechanic told me I will need to change
timing belt soon (102k) At over $1k.
I have had little trouble with it...and love it...
And nothing new excites me.
Is there any "notice" before it goes? Is it
worth changing?

It is a must to have changed out, and should be done asap. If the timing belt breaks on you and if that engine is an interference engine, then you would need major repair on the heads, bent valves. And no, there is no notice, warning, when the belt decides to let go. Have it done.

I would shop for a better price but your question regarding the belt giving a warning is ,,, no... and if the belt breaks than you will have a sudden and complete loss of engine power /// great info Rowefast gave you

No, if the belt goes you are done. There is no warning. Shop around and see who has the best price to replace it. Also have them replace the water pump, idler, and tensioner while they are in there. Rock Auto sells kit with all the above mentioned parts for under $100. You might be able to save some cash by showing up with your own parts.

The notice is after your car dies in the form of a bill for several thousand dollars in repairs.
