can i put an engine from a 2003 pt cruiser in a 2002 pt cruiser

can i put a 2003 standard engine and transmission in a 2002 pt cruiser i see that what looks like a crank sensor on the 2002 is exhaust side of the engine and the one on the 2003 engine is on the intake side of the engine can i just make the wires longer and it work

Engines are more backward compatible, so a newer engine should make for a simpler replacement. You're doing it right. Compare the engines for any differences you find, including connections & mounts.
