how can i return my shift linkage to its original placement

I have a 2206 ford explorer v6 4wd and my shift linkage is off a gear. if I want to
shift into D I have to first shift into 3 then up to D and wait to feel it shift into
gear. how can I fix this myself and return the shift linkage to its original
placement
