Ford Explorer V8 4.6 2003 Eddie Bauer - can we use different replacement transmission?

Asked by Gardoglee Jan 16, 2020 at 04:41 PM about the 2003 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer V8

Question type: Car Customization

I have a 2003 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 2WD with 4.6 V8 and, as far as I
know, the stock 5R55S transmission. i have been told it needs a transmission
rebuild. I have read from multiple sources that the 5R55S is not a very reliable
transmission. So, are there any more robust transmissions, like a 5R110x, that
can be substituted?

The best bet is always have yours rebuilt. With proper service the 5R55S will last a good long while.

Purchased a 99 explorer new, for my daughter, when he left for college. She is still driving it as it has been meticulously maintained. Believe it has a 5R55E transmission. Fluid and filter was changed every 30K miles. Still runs and shifts like new. I suggest you fix what you have instead of rolling the dice.
