C6 to V8 4.6 in an 02 Explorer

Asked by Jul 24, 2017 at 07:17 PM about the 2002 Ford Explorer XLS

Question type: Car Customization

What exactly would I need to swap from the 4.0 v6
I have in my Explorer, to a 4.6 v8. I am an ex Ford
tech. and can do it all myself, I just wanted
someone's input on this that has done it B4 and
can list exactly what I need. The vehicle was given
to me by my dad and if possible I'd like to convert it
to something more powerful and reliable. Thanx

Get a V8 donor Explorer.

If memory serves 2002 was a generational year change for the explorer. The V-8 Windsor engine previously used was replaced by the 4.6L 2V SOHC 16 valve engine. Anything different will probably cause problems. The proper engine will necessitate taking along the PCM/ECM and probably a host of sensors not included in the 2002 V6. If real lucky, you may be able to use the old PCM/EMC with just a re-flash, But the wiring connections will be different. FOR's suggestion sounds like the easiest way to go. One of the same generation.
