Whistling sound

Asked by Rhemar Dec 19, 2016 at 02:14 PM about the 2002 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I start my car it is making this loud whistling
sound. I have a 02 Ford Explorer V8 Eddie Baurer
edition.
I was told it could be the Eavc system, vacuum
needs to be cleaned and now they are saying it
could be a bad alternator. The only thing is my
lights nor radio are dimming and my battery is just
under a year old.
We've used the throttle body and air intake spray
and we don't here it anymore but I need better
answers to the possible problem.

Pop the hood, if the noise is coming from the alternator, you should be able to tell pretty easily. You can also have any auto parts store do a free check on the charging system (battery and alternator) so if it's bad you'll have your second opinion. To me, a whistling sound is associated with a vacuum leak. Try to pinpoint the source of the sound, sometimes a can of starting fluid lightly sprayed near the leak will cause the engine to rev, indicating you found the leak.
