It has been determined that the head gasket was blown.Now I need to know how to tear it down,

my advice,let your mechanic do the job,is a PITA if you have never did this.

agreed... you might even be looking at a new engine... the heads in the rangers and explorers are known to warp heads when the head gaskets go, and most of the time the head cant be machined to fix it and its hard to find a good set of used ones.
