Make sure all fuses are good. Does the dash switch indicator light up or are all lights dead. If all lights are dead then it sounds like a transfer case control module is dead. Dealer will need to install it as it has to be programmed to the vehicle VIN.

If I am looking at this diagram correctly it is in located on the pillar between the front and rear doors Drivers side

I have a 1997 xlt expedition,and my 4WD wont engage at all either,but yet light comes on for it in dash saying it is on,so not sure what the problem is

eather the switch is bad or the motor on back of transfer case is bad,this engages the 4x4,or the splines in hub assem,is striped.dont know what the hell the other guy posted in that digaram.

I have a 03 expedition and the AWD works but there is nothing for 4wd hi or low. I do not get and lights that turn on or off on the dash board and I do not feel anything engaging underneath either.

i have a 2004 ford expedition 4.6 had growling /gringing noise but goes away when turning left also have no 4 wheel drive the indicator lights light up when going into high or low but only back tires spin any info would be great

sounds like it was wheel bearings i changed all of them but still have that sound

@brimich03 Sounds like the actuators are bad. Same issue with mine. lights would come on, could hear it try to engage but no 4x4. grinding noise on front left when in 4x4. actuator was my issue.

Ok same as iffl15 my lights come on and when i go 4 low i hear it click,then when i go from neutral to drive i can feel the big clunk.but when i go off road its just the back wheels.so the big clunck just the transfer case engaging and not the hubs?

I HAVE AN EXP 1997 4X4 AND THE REVERSE DO NOT ENGAGE AND i HEAR A GRINDING NOISE WHILE i PUT THE REVERSE BUT IT DOES NOT TAKE THE REVERSE STAY GRINDING ??? WHAT CAN BE THE PROBLEM ????

1999 expedition no 4x4 lights and stuck in 4x4 mode will not disengage in neutral just turn switch hear clicking noise every 2 seconds continuous
