Actually the axle is free but the bearing is stuck to the housing. I didn't know if there was some kind of puller the could straddle the axle, if you will, and reach inside to the back of the bearing due to limited access from the rear

Rent a slide hammer and bearing puller. O'Reilys' lends them for free. I just used one of theirs myself.

I rented a bearing puller yesterday at autozone. It as one that hooks onto the lugs. Is there another kind that could get past the axel? I just tried to get a gear puller in there with legs reversed and couldn't slide by the axel

Maybe you will have to pull the axle out to get the clearance you need.
