Help? Wont switch gears.

I have a 2001 crown vic lx with 52,000 miles on it
& when I go to put the car in drive or reverse
(taking it out of park) it doesn't work. I can't even
put it in neutral to move it.  The stick moves but it
doesn't like click into gear at all. Car starts
perfectly fine. But it wont move. I have no clue
what im doing...

The shifter linkage on the transmission has popped of or the cable has broken.

It is possible it came off at the steering column too.
