how many cadtyic convertors doe the 1992 crown Victoria has
I have a 1992 Crown Victoria with 75,000 we took it to get it smog and all the
years we tooked it ans it passed intill now they claim the we modified by taking
off the cad conveters off except for two of them because the 1992 has 4 if them
but my car has two. we took it to Midas and the car takes two and in 2005 my
dad replaced them. but the State of California is not letting it pass.
the original emission equipment must be there and those emissions from the tail pipe must be at a certain level , you must have both , the cats do a majority of the emission work for oxides of nitrogen and what not , even if it's off a little they will bust your nads because they have absolutely nothing else to do , The polar bears hate you
Hmmmmmmm, sounds like they're trying to get this 25 year old car off the road! Or the 18 year old "inspector" has no idea of what he's looking at!! Visit your local auto parts store or Ford Dealer. Ask them for a copy of the complete exhaust system diagram. Then take it with you to inspection. They can't argue with that. HTH. -Jim
I did looked in the internet it does shows it has two in each side were the manifold is connected and I called ford parts since the car is that old they don't have a diagram for that year,also service said that it is obsolete and they referred me to a muffler shop because they will not work on it.
We sell Walker Exhaust at the NAPA where I work. Which is another option. Your local NAPA should be able to pull up the diagram and print it. If not, as a last resort, try Faxon Auto Literature in Riverside, California for a copy of the original shop manual for your car. That should show a complete diagram of the exhaust system as well. Faxon is reasonably priced and has excellent reprints. I've bought from them several times. They have a website. HTH. -Jim
Ok, here's what I was able to find. Since I don't know if you have single or dual exhaust I downloaded both diagrams. It's a little confusing but you have 4 converters. But only 2 units. One unit on each side containing 2 converters. Here's the single exhaust diagram.
And here's the dual exhaust diagram.
You can see that in the front of both diagrams there's one unit on each side of the engine containing two converters each. If that's what you have, that's what the car was originally equipped with in 1992. I didn't see any difference for California Emissions equipped vehicles either. So you should be ok. HTH. -Jim
I looked up your exhaust system today. We (NAPA) show a front and rear converter for each side. But they're universal fit converters. Direct fit converters aren't available. So what would happen if you needed to replace one is you'd buy the universal converter, cut the original converter out of the exhaust system, and clamp or weld the new one in place. I did that with my 2000 Grand Prix. Works just fine. HTH. -Jim
Thanks for your help like you said that when I got it smog last Saturday the other 18 year old person in the other side of the computer did not know anything about that year of car and being it is 25 years old just fail it and the person that I took it did not understand why it failed too it been the same place I been taken the car for year since he opened his shop.
I've been in that situation before at the inspection station! Years ago when I had my '66 Cadillac and '70 Pontiac they were always trying to fail me for something they didn't understand. One time, with the Cadillac, they said that the front parking lights didn't work. I said they sure do. When I showed the "inspector" he said they're supposed to be on with the headlights too. I told him NOT on a passenger car made BEFORE 1968 they're SUPPOSED to switch off when you turn on the headlights! He got his supervisor, the supervisor pulled out the regulation book and saw that I was correct! Haha! Thankfully, in New Jersey, cars made before 1996 are now exempt from inspection. If these people are going to be inspecting vehicles they need to know what they're looking at! I hope the diagrams help you pass inspection and teach them something new at the inspection station!! -Jim
