How do I stop my 2000 Chevy Tracker from overheating?

Asked by KRWcars May 03, 2015 at 07:40 PM about the 2000 Chevrolet Tracker 4-Door 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car is a 2000 Chevy tracker 4
door 4 wheel drive automatic. I
bought it and drove it for 2 hours
with no problems, turned the a/c on
and as soon as the air became cold
the a/c stopped working and the car
started overheating. I turned the a/c
off and pulled over. My dad changed
the water pump/sensor and it was
running fine parked would not over
heat but within minutes of driving
again it steadily overheated. The car
will not start without being jumped
now also. Any help would be
appreciated. The fans both work as
they should and everything seems
great until you move it.

Does anyone else think this might be either a worn belt or tensioner? That's all I can think of, because the AC compressor, water pump, and alternator share a common belt and slippage could cause each of those conditions.

Yes he changed the thermostat and checked the belt. He's hoping it isn't a head gasket.
