Asked by GuruXKR8X Nov 07, 2018 at 01:43 PM about the 2000 Chevrolet Tracker 2-Door Soft Top 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2000 tracker ,1.6 engine,4wd,manual trans.  Replaced alternator 6 times.charges from 13.5v to 14v . after about 1 week it starts to raise the voltage. it will go up to 18 volts and then goes down to 10v or 9 v. when I put another one in it will do the same thing. I have put 2 new batteries in but it still does the same. Before it fails I feel the alt.back and it is very hot.

Crappy quality alternators. Find a better source.

I would agree with getting a quality alternator. Also, next time (hope never) it starts increasing voltage, check the wire from the ECM to see if the ECM is actually controlling the alternator. I've done "involuntary QC" for chain auto parts stores, but never had 6 parts all be bad. It might in be the vehicle. Also a loose connection from the alternator to the battery may be the culprit - a voltage drop test will rule that out.
