Will a 4.0 engine out of a 96 Ford Explorer work in a 93 ford explorer.

The engine itself will hook up. Just remember the 96 explorer 4.0 is a push rod engine, OHV. What came in the 2003 is a SOHC 4.0 engine. Also, the push rod engine has about twenty or so fewer horsepower. Also, the 4.0 from the 96 may play havoc with the computer controls and emission system. There may also be a problem with emission laws in your state of residence which would cause the older engine to fail the state test. Best you check out your emission regs in your state before sorting out the tools.

Shouldn't, if both are OHV 4.0 engines. Easy way to check is to look up the offered engines for 93 and see if the 4.0 was available.
