I have had this problem multiple times. There are three sensors you should check out. I bought the Haynes Repair Manual for my Explorer and has been a huge resouce. The Mass Airflow Sensor could have gone bad<- 65 on Amazon.com, the Throttle position sensor may not be working<- 30 bucks at most auto places, or the Idle Air Control valve could be bad <-50 bucks Amazon.com. All you need to check these is a cheap Multimeter and the Haynes manual it will tell you what they should be doing electicly.

Ben makea a great point. I'm over 60 and when I was growing up all you needed to know about repairing a car that would not run was three things. Fuel (from the carb), air (get it into the carb), and spark (from the distributor. You still need those things today, but you also need knowledge of electronics since newer engines will just not operate correctly, or at all, if some electronic part is faulty. Invest in a multi-meter and a Haynes book for your vehicle. It does tell you what to check and how to check the various components.
