why is my idol going up and down

Asked by Taylort Apr 03, 2012 at 05:53 PM about the 1993 Ford Escort 4 Dr LX Hatchback

When it idles for a white smoke come out the back, and can you can smell fumes in air as if it is running a rich or
lean. The idol runs high And low or surges.  I do not know what to adjust because it's all electronics, please help

Sounds like an O2 sensor issue. Before you change it however I would go to your local AutoZone and have them extract the codes. They will do this for free. If you are close to the 100,000 mile mark I'll bet O2 sensor is bad.
