how do i diagnose engine noise

Asked by noregrets Apr 04, 2014 at 10:37 PM about the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado SS Extended Cab AWD

has had a tapping noise for 95000 of the 155000 miles. getting much louder. Not sure if it
is lifters or piston skirt or rod. oil pressure is great, doesn't use oil. IS it possibly the
torque converter or flex plate? has anyone else had this problem?

Use a doctor's stethoscope or you can buy one designed for automotive use at Auto Zone, etc. With engine running, listen with scope probe along valve cover, side of block under exhaust manifolds, and toward the back of motor. Should help you isolate the noise. Piston skirt and rods will usually be duller than tapping.
