Not starting

I have a 94 thunderbird with about 200k miles on it.  
I had an issue a couple of months ago with not
starting and it turned out to be just a bad
connection however now a similar issue. I replaced
the starter but when i turned the key over it
wouldn't click at all but i jumped the terminals on
the starter and it fired up. After letting the battery
charge for about 10 mins running i tried to drive it
and as i was backing up it stalled out and would
not restart. I tried jumping the terminals again at
the starter but it just free spun and wouldn't
engage to the flywheel. What could be the cause?
A bad connection or maybe my electric switch in
the steering column? Amy help would be greatly
appreciated

How old is the battery and the condition, like voltage?
