I think the Vortec 8100 (8.1 L) engine was an option for your truck. If you can find a donor truck it will make the job a lot easier. The main thing to look for is keeping it smog legal by using an engine that complies with 2002 emissions standards.

The 8100 series engine was not available in the 1500 series trucks. 2500/3500 series trucks used the 8.1 but mated to a 4L80 transmission. Your L59 5.3 liter engine made 295 horse and 335 torque. The 8.1 only made slightly more at 330 hp and 450 torque. The extra weight of the 8.1 and the 4L80 trans make this swap not really worth it.
