Ford Ranger XLT will not shift into any gear except neutral when idling

Asked by Guru94KY May 01, 2017 at 12:57 AM about the 1994 Ford Ranger XLT Standard Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My truck is a Ford Ranger XLT short bed 3.0L six cylinder 5-speed
transmission from 1994.  When the truck is on and idling, I cannot shift the
stick into any gear.  It is as if I would have to force it into the gear to make it
shift.  When I do force it into a gear, the transmission grinds.  I found out the
Clutch Fluid Resivoir was bone dry, so I filled it to the line, but that did not
help.  I am able to shift into 2nd gear without pressing the clutch down when
the truck is stationary and not running.  Is there anyone that can possibly tell
me what could be wrong?

If the clutch fluid was dry you probably need to replace the clutch slave cylinder. The clutch isn't releasing causing the gears to grind. If it were mine I would also replace the clutch master cylinder.

Got air bubble in clutch master cylinder , only way to get bubble out is remove and bench bleed master cylinder.

Transmission fluid is low needs to add up fluid only at operating temperature (idling in park then shut off engine wait 2 minutes then check the trans dipstick if fluid doesn't reach at the top peep hole then add the trans fluid, transmission lever position sensor needs to realign to Neutral position, check for crack transmission pan gasket, check the driveshaft seal for leaks.
