Checking transmission with bad motor/engine

Asked by Depguy Aug 30, 2015 at 08:38 PM about the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT Extended Cab LB 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 z71 silverado I got out
of a barter deal for basically free. The
motor is shot. I think it's the bottom
end, it's knocking like hell. My
question is if installing a new/used
motor is the best option per cost and
I want to know if I can check the
transmission with the motor shot. I'd
like to get it fixed up to keep it sell
and I need some advice! Thanks.

I think so but I don't know how to find out. I got the truck after the motor was trashed. I can't rebuild a motor so I'm assuming putting in a used one is my best choice, but if the trans is gone I want to replace it at the same time.

Take transmission to a transmission repair shop and have them check it out. Make sure that they wont instantly try to sell you a new one. Used motors are a crap shoot, I would have it checked and rebuilt by a reputable engine builder. GM offers a low end crate engines that don't cost and arm and a leg. Check Jegs or Summit also.
