2000 Silverado 1500 4x4, eliminating 4x4

Asked by Lawnguru Apr 26, 2014 at 12:26 AM about the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2000 Silverado 1500 4x4, High mileage lawn service truck with broken 4x4. Now starting to grind in case, I removed front axles and driveshaft and noise is gone. Is it ok to leave everything off and just eliminate 4x4 it's not needed anyway. Thanks for any advice :)

Im pretty sure the cv axle ends are needed to hold the front bearings together. Or at least a nut and bolt combo

I ended up dismantling the axles and just used the end with the nut and washer. Just seemed it would be stronger with that support, working great so far. Thanks for the reply.

Ok that works too. Just make sire its never in auto while unhooked

I was going to go through the fuse box and check out and remove anything related to 4x4. Just not sure if it will effect anything else so I'll do one at a time. I also fabricated a plug to replace where the yoke came out. Took it for a spin, everything seems solid. Guess time will tell :)
