Speedometer drops to 0 and radio sound goes down

Asked by wertach Dec 21, 2010 at 03:18 PM about the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Stepside RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

It is actually a 1996, didn't have that selection. The speedometer isn't working right. It stays on 0 most of the time and when it does jump up to close to the correct speed the radio  becomes clearer and slightly louder. On the wiring diagrams (Haynes repair manual) it shows the radio connected to the vehicle speed sensor buffer.

All other gauges work fine. Would this be a ground problem or speed sensor?

it has a function on the radio about auto volume or something like that just turn off that function and your ready

Thank You! I turned it off. then the radio was OK, speedometer was still acting up so I found the speed module and pulled the connectors. They were corroded so I cleaned, replaced and everything is good! I was planning on jacking it up this weekend and replacing the speed sensor on the tranny. You saved me a lot of work and a few bucks!
