overheating issues for 98 k1500 4wd 5.7L truck

Asked by Apr 10, 2017 at 08:49 PM about the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 3 Dr LT 4WD Extended Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 98 chevy k1500 4wd 5.7L truck that keeps overheating. The water in
the radiator does not circulate or get hot. The gauge will go clear to the red
though when your driving it, but when it idles it doesnt go above 230 degrees.
I have a new thermostat and water pump. Could the water pump be
circulating the wrong way.

Was the cooling system purged from the air pockets when refilled?

when hot again check the radiator hoses is one collasping or closing off???recheck thermostate put it in some boiling water..does it open up a good amount?not installed upside down?? also start the engine with the thermostate out and the housing off...water shoul pump out of it there...keep in touch...if it is a hose they make them with a spring that goes inside them also.. and if you can drill a few holes into the thermostate as shown in the picture to help bleed air out of the system

Alao, double check the serpentine belt routing. Some water pumps are designed to spin opposite the direction of the crankshaft pulley. HTH. -Jim
