Truck starts and runs for a second or two then dies

Asked by mattschevy Dec 04, 2013 at 04:57 PM about the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I replaced fuel pump about a year ago with no problems until now
I just installed a new fuel filter nothing changed still starts and dies I started having some weird electrical issues in the last week before it wouldn't start some of them are auto headlights not working no dome light or cargo light and the word security staying on all the time in my message center its looking like an electrical problem more than fuel any suggestions?

I believe it has something to do with your spark plug, you should also check all the wires going to your battery to make sure there isn't a split, burnt, or a short in your wires. But first replace the spark plug the check your wires. I wish you the best of luck.

Something grounded out and prob shorted a inline fuse so when you turn the key to run you hear your fuel pump Prime the line but when you crank the motor starts then dies. It has to do with your gin. Or ecu. Pcm not telling the pump to fun. Find where it loses that run signal and problem fixed

Engine starts right up then dies. It happened last year as well. Although I tried to start it multiple times over a couple weeks I gave it one last try after I called the tow truck. It started right up and engine stayed running like it was supposed to. No more problems for almost a year until about a week ago. I did nothin to fix it a year ago. I'm still trying to start it periodically like a year ago. Hopefully I'll eventually get it to stay running so I wont need to pay for a tow.

Ok SOLUTION ...... these trucks are notorious for the security locking out even the owner with the proper key. You can reset the passlock system (takes about 30 or 40 mins) this will usually fix the problem however it will usually do it to you again at the absolute worst possible times. You can bypass the security system completely and never worry about the problem again. You will not have a security system in your vehicle once it is bypassed. To reset the pass lock system Make sure your battery is fully charged as your key will be on for 30 to 45 minutes while you are resetting the passlock system. Start your vehicle and let it die once it dies your security light will start flashing leave your key in the on position The security light will flash for roughly 10 minutes and then will either stay illuminated or will go off once it stays illuminated or goes off turn your key off for 15 seconds then start your truck again and let it die repeat this process three times and on the third time the vehicle should start and stay running if it does not on the third time do it again sometimes it takes four times sometimes only three. If you would like to bypass the pass lock security system also known as the VATS system you will perform this exact same procedure The only difference is you will need to take the plastic cover off of your steering column top and bottom. Right above your key you will see three wires the one to the far right will be red the middle one and the far left one are normally yellow and orange however the colors do vary sometimes do not mess with the red wire but cut the yellow and orange wire. Tie the yellow and orange wire together on one side of where you cut as well as tie the yellow and orange wire together on the opposite side of where you cut so both sides should be tied together heat shrink or wire nut the wires together then perform the procedure to reset your pass lock once your truck starts and stays running after 3 or 4 times of doing it your security system has been disabled and you should never have to worry about that again. I hope this helps I am a long time mechanic and even this one stumped me until I finally figured it out. Best of luck and if there are any questions feel free to reach out

The positive battery cable is bad. The pigtail wire that feeds constant current to your ECM is corroded in the battery connection, put a new connector on that wire, or replace the cable. You can test it by bypassing the terminal connection with a jumper wire from the battery post to the ECM wire. Unplug it from the harness and feed 12V directly into it. If it starts this is your problem. I'vee had many different types of vehicles with this same problem.

Yes @guru334ct, @rhett2018S response from 4 months ago worked perfectly for me. It’s an acreage truck so I don’t mind if the security light is on.

I am having the same problem it started then died and won't start. The fuel pump is working I replaced the battery. But the whole dash cluster went out and the security light stays on. I've watched the battery drain should I replace spark plugs? It hasn't had a tune up in a while and is running over 200,000 miles. It trys to start but won't turn over. When I have explained my problem to people most have said it could be the BCM

Mine did the same thing. start and stop start and stop within just a few seconds.I pounded on the top of the column in the middle adjacent to the key switch as I tried to start it and started right up and stayed running. so wires must be loose. I'll take care of it in the morning.

2005 Tahoe starts but dies straight away. PLEASE DONT SINK MONEY INTO TAHOE. If the problem isn't your body control module , fuel pump, injectors, nor ignition switch. Flip over engine compartment fuse block carefully and check for bright green coloring around wire port. If any color is present use an 8mm or 10mm socket and loosen the bolt holding the wire connectors on the bottom of fuse block. Carefully unplug connectors and notice acid corrosion. Clean with electronic cleaner sold at any auto parts store and spray generously until copper/silver color indicates clean and spray clean the fuse block connectors and inspect wire connectors wire port for black , melting or charring. If any present replace the damaged terminals. To diagnose bad fuse block terminal use a test light. Hook - side of test light to ground. Turn on ignition don't start. Test each fuse pole every fuse pole side will light . If one pole of fuse lights test light then replace fuse of both poles of fuse does not light it indicates a broken wire, corroded connection, or damaged fuse block connectors.

Problem with every car is battery acid sloshing out of vents on top or side of battery. Rain dilutes the acid to electrolytic fluid and shorts batteries and the vapors cling to anything metal. The engine compartment fuse block on Tahoe sits behind battery and subject to corrosion. The bottom of fuse block in engine compartment connectors not sealed from rain or any other fluid and subject to corrosion. Symptoms of failure to start, security light on or flashing, fuel pump quits, injectors won't pulse and even cause constant dead battery. If there is no power to those systems they will diagnose bad unless bench tested. How I do it. Refer to previous post. ∆

In my Tahoe case of start then dies I had two wires corroded on cooling fans relay block and on ECM, PCM and BCM fuse line in engine fuse block. now starts and doesn't overheat now. The fan relay block sits behind engine fuse block accessable by removing the whole cover not just lid.

I have an 02 Chevy Silverado 4.3 L V6 and mine was doing the same thing as the others in this thread but for me it was the battery cells leaking into the battery pan and onto the PCM once I took it all apart and cleaned it repaired any corrosion and covered the pan with Flex Seal as well as the part of the PCM that had been contacted with corrosion put it back together and my truck immediately had all the power back my lights were brighter inside and outside dash lights were bright and even the radio was picking stations up better hope this helps

I just had the same issue as Mattschevy. No headlights, dome lights, would start briefly but then die. Also noticed I couldn't unlock driver side door with key fob or button inside. Turned out to be TCB fuse at very bottom right corner of fuse box under hood.
