Back up light switch

Asked by DHolland56 Feb 26, 2011 at 05:07 AM about the 1994 Ford Ranger XLT Extended Cab 4WD SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Where is the back up light switch located exactly?  I have replaced the bulbs, even though the old ones are still good.  Any info or direction would be greatly appreciated

the back up lamp switch is located on the transmission. there should be a plug that unplugs then the switch itself will thread out.

I have the same question (2001 ranger 5spd). Any chance someone knows if it's either the red plug in the upper left corner of the photo or the black one in the bottom right? Side note- the red one just plugs in and out (no thread) so maybe that's a clue?

2008 Ranger, 5 speed, left side at the top, threads into the shifter housing on the top of the trans. 6L5Z-15520-A SW6396 It'a a bitch to get to. Automatic, it is part of the neutral safety switch, basic # 7A247or 7F293. It will be on the left side where the shift cable/linkage attaches.

M5R1 Manual GearBox (Mazda) - The switch itself is located on the driver side of the transmission towards the top, forward. The connector is black and the switch is red. I traced what I thought was an open in the switch to the connector and replaced the switch and both bulbs, I even hard wired the back up wire (purple) at the tail light connector under the rear bumper. The lights still did not work. The only other thing I could think of is that the shift linkage in the manual transmission may be loose or worn to the point where it no longer makes contact with the switch when the reverse gear is engaged. Otherwise you may need to work on tracing any shorts to B+, (-) or an open circuit. I have yet to do this as I have had bigger fish to fry rebuilding the rear differential and all the rear suspension and brake components. This is a simple system but if you have checked replaced bulbs, switch and connector here is one way to determine if it is a wiring issue - hook up all the bulbs and remove the switch from the transmission. Place a mirror behind the truck or have someone spot behind and depress the button of the switch. If the bulb comes on doing this but not when the truck is in reverse gear then there is an issue with the shift linkage. If it still does not come on and you have checked the connector under the rear bumper you have a n issue with the circuit and will need to trace the source of the break using a multi meter. Happy wrenching boys. ***NOTE*** You can do the same diagnostic set with an automatic though I am not certain where the switch itself sits in the AT. Refer to you repair manual to find the switch location and you can go from there.
