Replaced transmission linkage cable now van wont go into gear when key is on

Yes cable is vehicle secific some have adjustments I can shift through gears when brake is on and car is off. .that's the problem..Im thinking pin a clamp adjustment inside steering wheel column...ink..Im 54 or old female with a mechanic friend helping me..its a 1993 Chevy G20 6cyl 4.3l
