Can't remove keys from ignition

Asked by krw71 Jun 21, 2016 at 06:28 PM about the 2006 Chevrolet Aveo LS Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an 06 chevy  aveo
Couldn't remove key from ignition or shift
out of park. To get my key out, I had to
remove the 10 amp fuse that operates the
radio and clock. I used a screw driver
sticking it in the slot on the gear shift until I
could replace shift lock selonoid. I replaced
selonoid and fuse for radio. I now can shift
out of park but can't  remove key.

Probably the lock tumblers are worn out. Best bet would be do swap the current key cylinder with a used one from a junkyard. Or you could call a locksmith but it might be expensive.

There should have been a recall on this. It happened on Cobalts too.
